Smithsonite was named after British Mineralogist James Smithson. (Also the benefactor of the Smithsonian Institute). Smithsonite has been confused with Hemimorphite. It can be found in a variety of colors, Cadmium creating the yellow varieties, Cobalt creating the pinks and purples and Copper creates the blue or green varieties. This stone is also known as Aztec Stone and Bonamite. It has a hardness of 4-4.5 and is found in Mexico, Namibia, Zambia, and USA.
